This year the party conference was held in Birmingham. The York Tories attended and, including the vast amounts of alumni, there were approximately 30 of us taking on Birmingham! We attended any event that offered free food and wine, stuffing our faces with legendary duck spring rolls, pork and/or prawn balls (we couldn’t decide which meat they were) and, sadly, rather weak coffee. The Chancellor, London Mayor and Leader speeches were all attended, with many of us getting seats just behind the likes of Michael Gove, Lord Strathclyde and William Hague (and in one instance even our own Julian Sturdy!). Rachael Burrell, Tom Byrne and Sarah Ralphs were interviewed for BBC news, with our own chair announcing his difference of opinions with David Cameron – particularly when it comes to Europe! The Tories attended fringe events on fossil fuels, economic growth, rural social movements, banking and libertarian philosophy.
