Do you ever wish you lived in a bygone era? A time when sullen Yorkshiremen, flat-capped to a man sat on splintered wooden barstools, drinking pint after pint of bitter from crude pewter tankards after working 32 hours a day down’t mill for tuppence a fortnight? Then throw on your rose-tinted glasses and join us as we tour some of York’s more traditional drinking establishments, where children are left outside with a packet of pork scratchings and the only food is stapled to a piece of cardboard.
Our first social of 2014, the ‘Old-Fashioned Pub Crawl’. After a day spent hard at work campaigning in York Outer, we had our first drinks of the evening in D-Bar before heading into town. Our first port of call was the Three Legged Mare on High Petergate. It was clear that Christmas had taken its toll on the York Tories as the crawl slowly became more of a sit-down as the evening progressed. We finished in Ye Olde Starre Inn on Stonegate with a pint or two before closing, and then headed to Macumba Cocktail Lounge. This now regular haunt for the York Tories was the beginning of a mini cocktail crawl, with Dusk’s two-for-one offers on the cards also. As the early hours ensued, the inevitable occurred – Willow.
All in all a sound night, well-attended by members of the society. Congratulations to Events Officers Keane and Pearse for a great social and a fantastic way to start 2014. Expectations are high!
