On Friday the Association held a somewhat controversial debate: This House Believes that the Coalition is Failing the Poorest in Society. The debate was well attended. The room was filled out with students from many different campus parties, along with some simply interested in the debate rather than party politics. The debate split the members of the York Tories. Some argued that the government could do more for the poor, but aren’t failing them. Others suggested that many government policies simply favour the wealthy. Oddly enough much of the debate centered around HS2 and whether the money spent is worth the long term profits and job creation. The debate finished promptly as we were all starving, so in the traditional manner the event ended up with a delicious curry!
