UYCUA regularly holds debates after its weekly committee meetings, occupying a central place in the society’s life.

They are most often held in a ‘parliamentary’ style format, with chairs arrayed on opposing sides and a few at the end for abstainees.

Recent debates have included motions concerning unlimited Commonwealth immigration, the restoration of capital punishment, encouraging the institution of marriage and a flat tax policy.

York Tories has regularly put up speakers for events organised by other societies, with Chairmen past and present appearing on Debating Society’s ‘Question Time’ panels, Comedy Society’s ‘Have I Got News For York’ show and on University of York Radio.
